Anxiety

Anxiety is a complex and highly individualised experience, with each person experiencing it uniquely, leading to a distinct journey for those dealing with it. My own struggle with anxiety began at 16, when I received my diagnosis, marking the start of a period filled with obstacles and uncertainties. Each day was a tough battle, with a strong reluctance to leave the safety of home and a constant flow of worries that consumed my mind, leaving me overwhelmed and powerless. Public panic attacks became frequent, intensifying my feeling of losing control over my thoughts and emotions.

Despite the unwavering support from loved ones, I felt a deep sense of detachment hindering my focus on even simple tasks. The relentless fight-or-flight response I faced took a toll on me physically and emotionally, plunging me into internal conflict, isolation and frustration.

At the beginning of my journey to address my anxiety, I decided to give Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) a try. While CBT is known for providing practical tools to manage symptoms, I soon realised that it was only scratching the surface of my issues. Seeking a more profound understanding of the root causes of my anxiety, I made the transition to person-centred therapy. This shift allowed me to explore my emotions, experiences, and beliefs in a more holistic way. Despite facing challenges and uncertainties along the way, my persistence in therapy started to pay off. I began noticing subtle but significant signs of improvement in how I coped with my anxiety. These small victories brought a glimmer of hope into my life, reassuring me that progress was indeed possible. Each session became an opportunity for self-discovery and growth, as I unravelled layers of my anxiety and gradually learned to confront and overcome it.

Overcoming anxiety seemed like a daunting task, especially because of its link to my identity. However, I chose to confront my fears directly and embrace the idea of a life with reduced anxiety. This transformative journey had setbacks, but recognising the natural ups and downs of progress helped me regain balance and resilience in the face of adversity.

Embracing change was a crucial turning point in my healing journey, triggering a notable transformation. Motivated by a strong aspiration for self-improvement, I bravely ventured into the field of counselling. Each interaction enriched my understanding, fostering compassion and uncovering the complexities of mental well-being, shaping me into the compassionate counsellor I am today.

During tough times, it's essential to remember that you are not alone in your struggles. With time, resilience, and the support, navigating and ultimately conquering anxiety challenges is indeed possible.
